The city of Sullivan (IN) issued the following news release Friday on Facebook:
City of Sullivan receives $500,000 from OCRA for new fire station
On Feb. 23, the City of Sullivan was awarded a Public Facilities CDBG grant of $500,000 by the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA). This funding will support the construction of a brand new five-bay fire station to replace the City’s current aging facility. The new station will be located at 801 North Broad Street.
“This is yet another exciting win and milestone for the City of Sullivan,” says Mayor Clint Lamb. “Public safety is a priority. Our ‘Sullivan Safe’ program is dedicated to ensuring that we have infrastructure, processes and resources in place for citizens’ safety. With the recent movement of the Sullivan City Police Department, this new fire station is an important step in helping us continue this mission. We thank the Lt. Governor and OCRA for supporting this effort.”
The current fire station, located in the former City Hall at 32 N. Court Street, is housed in an old IGA grocery store. Both City Hall and the Fire Department have utilized the facility for decades, however, the building is structurally not supportive of either.
The Sullivan City Fire Department (SCFD) is responsible for fire protection services in the City of Sullivan and all of Hamilton Township. The SCFD also provides long-term contracts for mutual aid with eight other fire departments within Sullivan County and responds when called upon by other fire departments. SCFD’s high impact on the community and all of Sullivan County proves the necessity for this new station.
This highly anticipated project will benefit the quality of life for all residents for years to come. Stay tuned for more updates with the new station’s timeline and buildout.
