The F.I.E.R.O. Design Awards Jury members were impressed with Henrico County (VA) Fire Department Station 13’s new apparatus floor addition and the reconfiguration of the existing station. The flat roof form of the new three-bay apparatus floor is in deliberate contrast to the gable roof form of the old two-bay apparatus floor. But, the two contrasting forms are tied together nicely by the use of the same brick, the same shade awnings, related window details, and complementary decorative limestone bands. The old apparatus floor was divided into a training room and a physical fitness room. The public entry remains on the left side of the building. Visitors enter into a small lobby that is “watched” by windows from a front office space. The jury especially appreciated the “response loading flow” of the duty crew spaces at the back of the station to the rear of the apparatus floor. The jury took special note of the locker rooms that were laid out without any corner lockers. Photo courtesy of F.I.E.R.O. (Fire Industry Education Research Organization).
