Station: Rochester (MN) Fire Department Station 2
Architect: BKV Group
The Rochester (MN) Department’s Station 2 design, by BKV Group, impressed the F.I.E.R.O. Fire Station Design Awards jury by the way a complex set of requirements was pieced together on a difficult site. The replacement station had to house not only apparatus and crew assigned to Station 2 but also a backup regional dispatch center and a large combination classroom/community room/emergency operations center (EOC).
The EOC and dispatch functions are securely tucked under the station, taking advantage of the site’s topography. Using the most challenging part of the site for the station means the remaining site can be sold for retail development and future tax revenue to indirectly support the station cost and upkeep. The station also now houses an antique fire apparatus prominently displayed as a public relations tool. The mix of building materials was skillfully and appropriately handled.
