MIDLAND, Texas (Feb. 11, 2025) — Occidental (Oxy), one of the largest oil and gas companies in the Permian Basin, will donate 4½ acres of land in northeast Midland for an expected 12th fire station in the city, the city said in a press release.

Leaders from Occidental and the city of Midland participated in a Land Dedication Ceremony Tuesday (Feb. 11, 2025) at City Hall, 300 N. Loraine St.

“On behalf of the City of Midland, I extend our thanks to Oxy for their contribution of land. Our community benefits greatly from the generosity of local industry leaders and companies, as they give back to support the City and so many other organizations in our region, says Midland Mayor Lori Blong. “We’re so thankful to Oxy for the partnership and the shared vision for the future of Midland that this donation represents.”

Occidental, whose Permian headquarters are located in Midland, believes Midland’s firefighters are the heroes who risk their lives to protect the residents in our community and the donation of land in a growing part of Midland is a way to show gratitude and support for their unwavering dedication and daily bravery.

“More resources mean better coverage for the city and faster assistance during emergencies,” said Thaimar Ramirez, President and General Manager of Occidental’s Midland Basin Business Unit. “This land donation is not just about building a fire station; it’s about investing in the future of our community. It’s about creating a safer environment for our children and future generations.

The company says Midland is an essential community for its Texas operations and where many of its employees call home. “We’re committed to supporting the community’s safety in our oil and gas operations and being a good partner through this land donation so Midland can thrive and grow alongside our employees and company, ” added Ramirez.

The donated land is located southwest of the intersection of Big Spring Street (State Highway 349) and Occidental Parkway.

This land donation will better serve northeast Midland, which is located in District 1 – one of the fastest growing areas for residential and business activity. The people who call Midland home east of the State Highway 349 corridor will now benefit — like the rest of Midland — from the protection of the Midland Fire Department, whose coverage plan guarantees the best response possible and also means lower insurance costs.

“The City of Midland is incredibly grateful for the donation of land to ensure our growing city retains the land and resources needed to continue to provide critical services to our city,” District 1 Councilman Brian Stubbs said. “Partners like Oxy that value our city and residents are what make Midland a truly unique and special place to be right now. Having partners with the vision to see the needs of our city and the dedication to act to help are invaluable to our Midland.”

With the land donated, city leaders will work on funding possibilities.
