The city of Madison is expanding public safety services with the construction and renovation of the Public Safety Annex office, a 38,000-square-foot building in Town Madison, the city of Madison said in a press release.

Improved fire and police response will be the result for rapidly growing Town Madison as the city broke ground this week on the $9 million annex, al.com reported.

The facility will house Fire Station 4 as well as a police substation, city officials said Monday. Madison bought the building on Business Park Boulevard in 2023 from Hexagon for $4.4 million, and $5 million in renovations are under way. Madison County contributed $500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act funds last year.

The existing building is underway with full renovations to provide large training and office space for both police and fire units. The annex will be fully equipped to support Fire Station 4, the fire marshal’s office, the city emergency manager and fire inspectors. For police, the annex will also house office space for detectives, bike patrol, as well as full-time simulation training space.

“Expanding our emergency services bolsters our already safe quality of life. As our population grows, the annex accommodates residents in the southwest region of Madison near the busy hub of activity in Town Madison. This expansion allows us to not only improve internal operations but also strengthen partnerships with regional and state organizations, and other key stakeholders,” says Mayor Paul Finley.

“Keeping rescue response times low allows us to retain our highly coveted ISO-1 insurance rating for the City. The additional training space provides our team with the best possible resources to receive quality professional development,” adds Deputy Chief Brandy Williams who manages Madison Fire and Rescue training division.

“The Public Safety Annex is an integral step toward ensuring our officers have the space, tools, and support they need to effectively serve and protect our community. The additional space for our department is critical for maintaining our high standard of public safety,” says Police Chief Johnny Gandy.

“Moving a portion of our Police Department over to the Public Safety Annex location is a strategic step to free up necessary space for our departments at City Hall, improving the efficiency and accessibility of our local government,” says Steve Smith, City Administrator.

Renovations of existing office space at the Annex is expected to wrap summer of 2025, and construction of Fire Station 4 is predicted to finalize in spring of 2026.
