Community members are invited to tour the inside of Boulder Fire-Rescue’s new Station 3 Friday Jan. 24, 2025, at the official grand opening event, the city said in a press release.
Boulder Fire-Rescue’s newest station has been slowly gaining functionality since November 2024. Administrative offices and EMS crews began occupying the new station in the fall, and slowly the new station has become a replacement for the older Station 3. Boulder Fire-Rescue Station 3, located at 30th and Bluff Street, replaces the older Station 3 on 30th and Arapahoe. Along with the change in location comes increased safety for the community and improved health and wellness of firefighters.
Fire Station 3, located at 1585 30th Street, is outdated, inefficient, undersized and located in the 100-year flood plain. Relocation will allow for better service delivery to a significant part of the city that is not currently within a four-minute response time (industry standard) of any of our fire stations. This station is consistently identified as a high priority project due to its location in the flood plain, high energy use, and limited capacity. Relocation to a new facility will significantly help the city achieve and maintain energy goals.
A new station will significantly improve response coverage to a rapidly growing portion of the city. In addition, the station will allow for existing fire response resources to be repositioned and increase the efficiency of department operations while allowing for a potentially increased scope of emergency medical service (EMS) delivery.
Community members in the area of 30th and Bluff can expect to see more fire apparatus moving in and out of the new station bay, especially since Station 3 will soon house two crews and an ambulance. The relocation of this station complements, with faster response times and better distributed resources, the closest unit dispatch system that the city and county uses (meaning the closest vehicle to the incident responds). Boulder Fire-Rescue continues to prioritize the safety of the community, and this new station certainly provides another safety hub within the city.
First responders, firefighters included, put themselves in danger for our community. This type of sacrifice comes with exceptional preparedness including physical fitness maintenance, down time, and garage bays that circulate clean air better. The better trained, prepared, and equipped our firefighters are the better they can serve this community. This new station addresses each of those concerns in a way that will inform future station redevelopments.
Additionally, the new Station 3 will be the home to one of two brand new electric pumpers. Community members can expect to see the first electric pumper at the Jan. 24 grand opening as well at witness the official push-in of the engine into the bay.
There is so much that goes into developing a resource like this for the city, from community art to sustainable and reuse practices to workplace considerations. The city of Boulder and Boulder Fire-Rescue would like to invite you to come on a tour of our new facility at our grand opening event on Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
