Tyco Fire & Security featured two of its fire suppression brands at the Fire Department Instructors Conference in Indianapolis, Ansul with its Magnum 480 apparatus and Niedner with its Powerline and Double-5 hoses.
The lime yellow Ansul Magnum 440 Rapid Intervention Vehicle on display was built on a four-wheel drive Ford Super Duty F750 XL crew cab powered by a 325 hp Caterpillar turbo diesel engine and carried 1,350 pounds of PKW dry chemical agent and 300 gallons of Ansulite AFFF.
The apparatus is designed to respond to emergencies more quickly than conventional vehicles and to be fully deployed by a single operator, according to the manufacturer.
The concept behind twin-agent fire fighting is a combination of flame knock-down and securing vapor, according to Ansul. Purple-K dry chemical permits rapid flame knock down, making it particularly effective on pressure, running and spill fires and is a primary extinguishing agent for flammable liquid fires, said the maker.
Ansulite AFFF is synthetic aqueous film-forming foam that blankets the fuel with a thin film, preventing escape of flammable vapors and providing a degree of cooling.
The two agents are fully compatible and can be used without regard to order of application, says Ansul.
The Magnum series apparatus are particularly well suited to aviation, municipal and industrial firefighting.
Also in the Tyco booth was an array of Niedner hose, including its Powerline and Double-5 products. The hose offered weight reduction, reduced storage space, flexibility at extremely low temperatures and an increased strength-to-weight ratio.
