Odyssey Creates SUV Rescue

Odyssey Automotive Specialty has created a new rescue unit, based on a sport utility vehicle (SUV) designed to travel where most ambulances and squad vehicles cannot.

There are times when emergencies happen in places that are inaccessible and the Pine Bush (N.Y.) Volunteer Fire Department decided to ask Odyssey for help creating a vehicle that would allow its members to retrieve patients in remote locations efficiently.

Taking a 2006 Ford Expedition, Odyssey equipped it with a complement of cabinets and equipment for rescue and patient transfer when needed.

A portion of the rear cabinet can be dropped after the rear seat is folded, creating a level and stable platform upon which a backboarded person can be securely and safely transported.

When the seat is upright, the platform folds back into place, creating a screen separating the storage compartment from the passenger compartment to keep gear and equipment from flying and injuring occupants in the event of an accident.

A grill guard with wrap around protectors keeps the headlights protected and a police car-style post spotlight was mounted on the driver’s side as well to light up night time responses.

This new response unit can access areas where larger rigs cannot and includes all LED emergency lighting by Whelen controlled from Odyssey’s custom console with lifetime switch panel.

Established in 1979, Odyssey, headquartered in Wharton, N.J., manufactures first response EMS units, fire chief and command units and specialty law enforcement vehicles based on sport utility vehicles, vans, trucks, trailers, light and medium duty rescues.

In addition to response and specialty conversions, Odyssey offers custom cabinet systems built to order and shipped to you for “do-it-yourself” installation into existing vehicles.
