The city of New York has spent millions of dollars on custom-made GPS tracking units for city trucks, including fire trucks used by the FDNY. Unfortunately, according to these devices, the vehicles are tracked to locations as obscure as the bottom of the Long Island Sound or New York Harbor, according to a report from the New York Times.
The report states that audits point out the cost of a single unit in a sanitation truck as approximately $56,000. John C. Liu, the comptroller, was quoted to say, “Once again, millions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted on technology that falls short of what’s promised, raising questions about the oversight of expensive outside consultants”.
