WV Firefighter Dies Responding to Fire; Second Firefighter Injured

One firefighter has died and another was injured while responding to a structure fire in McDowell County.

On Monday, February 17, 2025, at approximately 7:25 p.m., McDowell County 911 received a report of a structure fire in the 12000 block of Marshall Highway in Jolo, WV, the state fire marshal reports. The Bradshaw Volunteer Fire Department, Raysal Volunteer Fire Department, and War Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched.

While responding, a member of the War VFD, Deputy Chief JD ( Jeff) Lawson, became ill. He stated to the driver of the fire apparatus that he needed medical attention. The driver immediately turned the fire apparatus around and started driving toward Welch Community Hospital. They met up with an EMS unit and transferred the firefighter to that unit.

The EMS unit continued to Welch Community Hospital with Lawson. While in transit to the hospital Lawson became unconscious, and CPR efforts were initiated by the attending EMS crew. The firefighter was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

At the fire scene, Gary Coleman of the Bradshaw Volunteer Fire Department experienced breathing difficulties due to smoke inhalation. He collapsed at the scene and was airlifted to Charleston Area Medical Center for treatment. After receiving medical care overnight, he was released.

The structure that was on fire is also the residence of Mr. Coleman.

In addition to his service to the War department, Lawson also was a past officer in the Ocean City (MD) Volunteer Fire Company.

“Lawson’s influence on our department and its members will be felt for years to come,” the War department said in a Facebook post. “His dedication to teaching and mentoring others has created a lasting legacy that continues to strengthen our department.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
