Broad River Fire & Rescue’s Engine 22 escaped doom Monday after a bridge collapsed under its rear axle on the way to a call.
“At approx 11:58 today we were dispatched to a vehicle fire threatening a structure,” the department writes on Facebook. “Personnel could see heavy black smoke prior to arriving. As Engine 22 began crossing private bridge the decking collapsed under the rear axle. Extinguishers were shuttled to the fire from the main road.

“C22 arrived ahead of the Engine within a few minutes of alarm finding fully involved vehicle fire. Personnel were able to control the fire with over 12 extinguishers and with resident’s help using a garden hose keeping it from reaching a nearby propane tank and home.
“Lyda Wrecker arrived and was able to get Engine 22 back on solid ground without any damages noticed. Awesome job by everyone. This is a great example of why we always plan for the worst but hope for the best.”
