Highway Crash Takes Firefighter’s Life

HUDSON – Six members of the Hudson (IL) Community Fire Protection District, in western McLean County, Illinois, were injured, one fatally, when another vehicle struck fire apparatus as they worked an accident on a snowy interstate highway near Hudson during the evening of March 5.

According to a release from McLean County Coroner Beth Kimmerling and the Hudson Community Fire Protection District, firefighters were working a multiple vehicle accident on Interstate 39 near Hudson at 9:45 PM when a southbound semitractor trailer truck carrying automobiles lost control and struck three emergency vehicles belonging to the fire service and the Illinois State Police.

The names of the firefighters have not been released. The firefighter who died was pronounced dead at the emergency room of Advocate BroMenn Regional Medical Center in Normal at 11:38 p.m.

The release continues, “Today we lost a member of our Hudson family. We share in the sorrow felt by his loved ones, and we must not forget the valuable contributions he made to this community and the impact he has left on the Hudson Fire Department,” said Chief Dan Hite. “The Hudson Fire Department is a close-knit family, and the loss of one of our own affects us all. A tragedy of this type is felt by each and every member, but together we can make it through. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
