19 Firefighters Killed in Arizona Wildfire

YARNELL, AZ-In what is the greatest loss of life in a wildfire since 1993, 19 firefighters died on Sunday June 30 during a wildland firefight in Yarnell, AZ.

According to ABC News, the firefighters were working to protect themselves under fire-resistant shields at the time of their deaths. Eighteen of the lost were from Prescott Granit Mountain Hotshots.

Hotshot crews are often as close to a wildfire as you can get to establish protection lines. According to ABC News, the remove brush, treees, and anythign athat might burn in the direction of homes and cities.

According to CNN.com, by Sunday night the fire had burned more than 6,000 acres, destroying more than 100 structures.

This is the worst loss of life for the fire service since 9/11.
