Morehead, KY—The Morehead City Council gave the green light to investing in new equipment for Rowan County-area first responders. The purchase includes self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) for the Morehead Fire Department and a used four-wheel drive vehicle for the Morehead Police Department.
According to MFD Chief Jeff Anderson, the new airpacks improve the department’s compatibility with mutual aid throughout the county. The successful bid to supply the equipment was from Bluegrass Uniform and Equipment of Bowling Green at $55,865.
The MFD requested bids for the SCBA’s at the end of October and received two bids. The first was from Dills Fire and Safety of Wellston, Ohio, for $52,500. The second was from Bluegrass Uniform and Equipment of Bowling Green at $55,865.
said although the new equipment cannot be used with older apparatuses, mutual aid in the county uses similar equipment.
“The equipment we will be getting is new and it will be something we will have to build on,” said Anderson. “Our mutual aid response teams use similar equipment so we will be able to exchange cylinders and other rescue equipment.”
Farmers Fire Department, Haldeman-Hayes Crossing Fire Department, and the local HAZMAT 8 unit all have similar SCBA’s.
