Woman Crashes Stolen Wilson (NC) Ambulance

Police said a woman crashed a stolen ambulance into an elderly woman’s apartment hours after an SUV smashed into a tree Sunday morning.

Both wrecks happened near Wilson Memorial Hospital. Police were still investigating the crashes late Sunday.

A 43-year-old woman stole a private ambulance from the ambulance bay at Wilson Medical Center, according to police spokesman Sgt. Steve Stroud. She ran off the road and hit four parked cars before crashing into an apartment building.

The crash injured an 84-year-old woman who lived in the apartment. Police said she was taken to Wilson Medical Center and transferred to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville. She was in stable condition Sunday afternoon and is expected to recover from her injuries, Stroud said.

Police did not name the woman accused of stealing the Johnston Ambulance Service ambulance or the woman hurt in the crash.

Stroud said police found the driver in the woods after the crash. She is receiving a mental health evaluation and is being held on an involuntary commitment order, Stroud said.
