Warren paid $1.8 million for four new 2012 Sutphen custom-built Shield II pumper trucks, which include enhanced ability to produce foam along with water to attack fires.
The rigs are stronger and safer than past vehicles used by the department and meet all current National Fire Protection Association standards.
The trucks replace two 1990 rigs and two 1998 rigs that each had more than 120,000 miles, and represent the department’s first new vehicles in a decade.
The new rigs come one month after voters passed a 4.9-mill property tax increase for five years for police and fire protection. Although the rigs were purchased using a loan, the millage increase will help stabilize manpower levels after the department lost at least six positions in the past decade.
