Villages Public Safety Department FL Hosting 9/11 Memorial

The Villages Public Safety Department (FL) will host a firefighting rescue unit from New York City that serves as a mobile memorial to 9/11 and all firefighters killed in the line of duty.

FDNY Rescue 5 from the Remembrance Project will be at the fire station before traveling to the John Brucker Memorial Golf Tournament at Harbour Hills County Club. The tournament honors the 37-year-old Villages’ firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician who died in 2010 after a vehicle crash in Fruitland Park.

Project Remembrance works with fire departments across the country to host a pair of FDNY rescue units throughout the year.

The not-for-profit project was created by firefighters to restore, preserve and share Rescue 4 and Rescue 5 from 9/11 as educational tools, historical artifacts and memorials. The educational effort is focused on youngsters who were too young to actually understand the events of 9/11.

Organizers said the project is fully operated by firefighters from across the country. There are no paid members and all donations are used for fuel, maintenance and travel costs for the units.
