Two Hurt When San Diego Fire Apparatus Overturns

A San Diego fire brush rig overturned and rolled down a hillside, injuring two firefighters, in the Otay Mesa area Tuesday.

The firefighters were taken by ambulance to a trauma center, California Highway Patrol Officer Robert Catano said.

The accident occurred about 9:45 a.m. north of the Mexican border and about a mile and a half east of the end of Airway Road. The area is in rough open land at the foot of Otay Mountain.

An engine company was training on a brush rig when a front tire slipped off the dirt road and the rig overturned twice as it rolled down a hillside, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Lee Swanson said.

He said the firefighters got out of the rig on their own, and had minor to moderate injuries. One was expected to be released from the hospital by early afternoon and the other was being held a little longer for observation, Swanson said.
