The United States Senate unanimously passed Senate Resolution 104, which recognizes September as Campus Fire Safety Month. Since 2005, every session of Congress has passed such a resolution along with governors from across the country. This has helped dramatically in raising the awareness of the importance of campus fire safety on campuses.
“During National Campus Fire Safety Month, schools across the country will hold events to raise awareness in campus communities about how to prevent and respond to fires,” said Senator Lautenberg (NJ) in a statement. “Increasing safety awareness on our college and university campuses will help avoid tragedies like the deadly Seton Hall University fire. We need to take every step possible to keep our students safe so they can focus on their education.”
“September is the perfect time to recommit ourselves to campus fire safety, as students at colleges and universities throughout the nation are returning their studies,” said U.S. Rep. Bill Pascrell, Jr. (D-NJ-8), a House Ways and Means Committee member who has championed campus fire safety since the tragic fire at Seton Hall University more than a decade ago. “While college students are developing their minds and abilities for a better future, none of us can relent in our efforts to guard against the danger of fire in their residences, whether they live in dormitories or in off-campus housing. That is what the Campus Fire Safety Right-To-Know Act, which I proudly sponsored in the House, and what Campus Fire Safety Month are all about. I want to thank Senator Lautenberg for his continuing leadership on this issue. Let us all be committed to campus fire safety throughout the year.”
