The Rosenbauer Twister firefighting boot received the Red Dot Product Design award from the Northern Rhine Design Center in Essen, Germany. It was chosen out of 3,231 applicants
The award, given since 1955, has previously gone to BMW motor cars, Apple Computer and Bose Sound Systems among other internationally recognized companies.
Rosenbauer, in addition to being Europe’s largest fire apparatus manufacturer and second-largest in the United States, also produces firefighter protective gear. The Red Dot Award honored the company’s Twister firefighters’ boot made of hydrophobic waterproof leather with Sympatex breathable membranes to let sweat escape.
But the really distinctive feature is its stainless steel wire cable Boa Lacing System that is tightened by turning a side knob. A pull of the knob immediately releases the entire boot for quick removal.
The Boa system was developed for the snowboard industry and later adopted for high-end Footjoy golf shoes.
