Restoration Starts on St. Johns County (FL) Fire Apparatus

The St. Augustine Fire Department received new tires for a 1928 fire engine that previously was propped up on blocks.

“Getting these tires on Engine Three is a huge step,” Saint Augustine Fire Chief J.C. Costeira said. “We kept the truck up on blocks here at the station and only inflated the tires when we needed to move it on a vehicle hauler.

“The old tires leaked pretty badly and we only had a short amount of time before it had to be back up on jacks. These new tires will let us to move it around much more easily and will allow us to show off the truck at more events.”

The tires will allow the truck to be transported to events more easily.

“The tires for Engine Three are kind of like bicycle tires, with a tube inside,” Brad Cooper of the Friends of Engine Three said. “So we knew we couldn’t just go to a tire store and choose a set. To get some advice, we contacted Hal Fillinger, a specialist in fire engine restoration, and he led us to a company that makes custom tires and tubes.”
