WAYNE, MAINE—The Wayne Select Board will ask voters at a special town meeting here to authorize spending up to $50,000 from the town’s undesignated fund balance toward the purchase of a new fire truck for the town’s fire department.
The $50,000 would be in addition to $300,000 already saved in a reserve fund. The new truck would replace a 1979 pumper with faulty brakes and a rusted water tank which was taken out of service almost a year ago. The new truck would be four-wheel drive and lighter and smaller than the town’s other pumper trucks.
The new truck will also have a device on top of it that will allow firefighters to shoot water or foam from the truck onto a fire.
Fire Chief Bruce Mercier, in a letter he wrote to citizens with the deputy and assistant fire chiefs, said they recognize there has been an increase in the number of year-round homes located on gravel camp roads and long driveways, and the new truck was designed to both replace the older truck and provide better access to such homes than larger trucks can provide.
