Mayfield Village is donating a 1978 fire truck to the Western Reserve Fire Museum. The GMC pumper, is known as “Grandpa.”
“The truck was specially dedicated to rescue. It even had airbags, which no one in the area had at that time,” Mayfield Fire Lt. Ken Shrefler said.
The truck carried rope and all other necessary equipment for emergency rescue operations and was designed for quick-attack fire response. It was replaced with a truck twice his size in 2005, but he put in about 23 years of solid service and several additional years of second-line service.
Grandpa will go into the bay of the Western Reserve Fire Museum station, which is under construction.
