Recent fire apparatus accidents have depleted the Greenwich Fire Department fleet to the point that fire officials are now seeking a used rig to fill in the department’s inventory, greenwichtime.com reported.

Fire officials brought an emergency request to the Board of Estimate and Taxation for $150,000 on Jan. 22 to purchase a used engine. The request was approved and the department’s newest acquisition is expected to respond to calls later this year.

Funds will be used to “purchase a 20-year old fire engine with low miles,” according to documents submitted to the BET, the report said. The engine will “provide fleet stability for the next three to five years,” fire officials wrote.

Two accidents to engines in 2024 put the department in this predicament.

Engine 1 was totaled in June 2024 after an unregistered truck crashed into it on Interstate 95.

In December 2024, Engine 51 skidded on an icy road and ran into a utility pole.
