Fire personnel, city officials, and community members gathered on Monday, Dec. 23, 2024, to officially welcome a new pumper into service during a special ceremonial truck wash and push-in event at Fire Station 1, located at 203 Central Avenue, the city said in a press release

The ceremony began with the traditional truck wash, a symbolic ritual that signifies the start of the fire truck’s service with the department. Firefighters, along with local children and residents, took part in this community-oriented event, cleaning the truck and preparing it for its new role.

Following the truck wash, the fire truck was ceremoniously pushed into the fire station, a time-honored tradition that dates to the era when fire trucks were horse-drawn. During this portion of the ceremony, department personnel and community members manually pushed the truck into its new home, symbolizing the truck’s official arrival to the fleet.

The new pumper is a state-of-the-art addition to the department, equipped with advanced technology and enhanced capabilities that will improve firefighting effectiveness. The rig, purchased for $849,089, is designed to help the department handle fires, rescues, medical emergencies, and other critical situations with greater efficiency.

“The addition of this fire truck is a significant milestone for our department and our community,” said Springfield Fire Chief Jeff Glodoski. “It enhances our ability to serve and protect our residents, ensuring that we have the tools needed to respond to emergencies efficiently and safely. We are proud of this tradition and excited to see this new truck in action.”

As the Springfield Fire Department continues to grow, this new addition reflects the department’s ongoing commitment to providing the highest level of service and public safety. The truck will begin its active service immediately, supporting the department’s efforts to respond to emergencies throughout Springfield.
