A Cleveland (NC) Fire Department engine was struck by a vehicle Wednesday, Feb. 19, while responding to a motor vehicle accident on Interstate-40 amid snow and icy conditions, the department said in a Facebook post.

The crew of Engine 1 is safe and uninjured, the department said.

While the apparatus and crew were on the scene providing assistance, a vehicle approaching the scene slammed on its brakes, lost control, and slid into Engine 1. No firefighters were injured, and the driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries, the post said.

“We appreciate everyone who has reached out with concerns and offers of support. This serves as an important reminder—when driving in hazardous conditions, slow down, increase your following distance, and always move over for emergency vehicles. Our firefighters’ safety depends on it!”
