A Chicago Fire Department’s nearly 30-year-old Engine “dropped its rear axle while responding to an ambulance assist,” the department’s Second Battalion said in a Facebook post Monday, Feb. 24.

“Another one bites the dust,” the post said. “Engine 50 dropped its rear axle responding to an ambulance assist. Good thing they weren’t going very fast. 1995 spare almost 30 years old.”

The post said the engine involved was first put into service on May 4, 1995.

This comes 10 days after another department pumper slammed into a food pantry located inside a church on the South Side.

The accident happened Friday, Feb. 14, at West 103rd Street and South Morgan Street.

Initial reports said the brakes failed as the emergency vehicle was responding to a call. Surveillance video shows the engine avoiding a pole and a traffic light box and then crashing into the building.

Two firefighters were transported to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

In November 2024, a Chicago FD truck lost a wheel and it hit two other vehicles, causing damage.
