The new Pierce Velocity chassis sports front seat air bags, a vastly improved SCBA seat with modified seat belts, and a wide one-piece windshield with nearly complete wiper blade coverage. The city of Eugene, Oregon has ordered  five new pumpers and an aerial platform,  the first to be built using the new design.

Pierce Manufacturing Inc. of Appleton, Wis.,  has received its first order for apparatus to be built on its 21st Century Velocity chassis introduced at the International Fire Chief’s Association trade show in September.

Six new rigs-five pumpers and an aerial platform-have been ordered by Eugene Fire & EMS of Eugene, Ore. The order includes five pumpers and one 100-foot aerial platform, to be delivered beginning in mid-2007.

“We ordered the Velocity chassis after seeing it unveiled in a live Web cast,” said District Fire Chief Scott Bishop,  “We liked what we saw at the IAFC show so we set up a meeting with Hughes Fire Equipment, our Pierce dealer, to learn more about the safety features and improvements coming out with the new product line.”

“Since the Velocity chassis was unveiled several fire chiefs have told us this new design is just what they wanted and needed. It’s both practical and comfortable,” said Pierce President John Randjelovic.

“The Eugene order for six chassis confirms our market research and is a credit to our design and engineering teams to turn the ideas suggested by firefighters into a full-featured product,” Randjelovic added.

The Velocity chassis was designed with input from firefighters around the country. It includes five significant improvements: (1) increased interior space with more head, leg, shoulder and hip room for firefighters (2) easy-access storage areas contributing to an organized and efficient cab space (3) enhanced safety and visibility including front seat air bags, forward mounted mirrors, and one-piece windshield with three overlapping wiper blades providing a greater sweep (4) a new custom-designed SCBA seat, with built-in side roll protection, air suspension, self-adjusting double-length seat belts with dual retractors, and (5) fast access front tilt hood for routine maintenance plus in-cab access for engine and transmission fluid level checks.

The Velocity chassis is available with engines up to 525 hp, Allison EVS transmission, dual 540- amp alternators, TAK-4® independent front suspension, 45-degree cramp angle, 147.8-inch flat cab, seating for up to 10, front air bags and the Side Roll Protection system.
