Old firehouses are used in a variety of fascinating ways, reports the Democrat and Chronicle.
One of the most colorful reincarnations in Rochester (NY) is Craft Company 6 which for nearly 30 years has sold American and Canadian homemade arts and crafts in the former firehouse of Engine No 6.
Other examples include: a restaurant, arts center, furniture store and stadium director’s office.
Many of these old firehouses were used into the 1960s but the city had begun the process of replacing them in the 1950s. A scathing 1950 survey by the National Board of Fire Underwriters prompted the change. The report noted old firehouses in poor locations.
