Gloucester (MA) Bridge Restrictions Slow Fire Apparatus

New restrictions on fire trucks in Gloucester got a test Wednesday night.

The Department of Transportation recently determined heavy trucks, including fire apparatus, are too heavy to travel over a key access bridge in the city.

There are only two bridges over the Annisquam River in Gloucester and they are miles apart.

Firefighters say it took almost twice as long to respond to a chimney fire Wednesday because new weight restrictions prevented them from crossing the Blynman Bridge.

“I arrived on scene with an ambulance and we had to wait for the pumper truck to arrive,” said Deputy Fire Chief Steve Aiello.

The fire did not spread, but firefighters said if it had, the delay would have cost valuable minutes in fighting the fire.

The DOT said a routine inspection prompted the weight limit change on the bridge and is working on a repair plan.
