The Northampton Fire Department has become the first in Massachusetts to outfit its fire trucks with medical equipment.
Federal grants have paid for the heart monitors and medicines that are now standard equipment on two Northampton fire trucks. Assistant Fire Chief Duane Nichols said that if the three fire department ambulances are tied up, the fire trucks serve as an emergency back up.
The EMTs aboard the fire truck would help the patient, until an ambulance got there to take the person to the hospital.
