North River (Canada) Fire Department Gets Aerial Fire Apparatus

The North River Fire Department will soon have its first ladder truck, says Chief Kirby Wakelin.

The equipment is needed in the growing area that the department serves, says Wakelin.

“It’s a 65-footer. So we can use it for a number of different reasons. It doesn’t just have to be fire suppressant. But it’s easier to fight a fire from above than it is from below. So it’s an all-round good rescue tool,” said Wakelin.

The department will receive specialized training on using the ladder, says Wakelin.

“You have to be aware of the wires above you with the ladder going up and down, and general concerns of structures around you, and it takes specialized training to be able to do that stuff.”
