Newburg VFD (MD) Fire Apparatus Overturns En Route to Accident Scene

Members of Newburg Volunteer Fire Department were traveling in Engine 141 on their way to a car crash in St. Mary’s County when the fire truck overturned.

The driver of the engine lost control on an icy bridge near Creek View Place. The fire truck overturned and landed in a ravine.

All five of the firefighters on board were able to get out of the truck safely, according to information from the department’s website.

The five men were transported to the University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata with minor injuries.

Chief George Edelen said that despite using extreme caution and emergency driving maneuvers, there was nothing else the driver could do to regain control once the fire truck started to slip on the ice.

Volunteers from Bel Alton, La Plata, Hughesville and Cobb Island fire departments arrived to help.

Potomac Heights Volunteer Fire Department has offered use of one of its engines as Engine 141 is considered a “total loss.”
