New Bern aldermen recently had a contentious meeting over an issue that was decided seven months ago when the board approved funding for a new fire truck.
But Alderman Dana Outlaw, who will be sworn in as mayor at the December meeting replacing Mayor Lee Bettis, got reprimand by Bettis for wanting to table the purchase of a $755,626.92 fire truck.
After a presentation by New Bern Fire Chief Bobby Aster highlighting how he and his staff worked since May to get the best price for a ladder/pumper truck to replace a 20-year-old fire truck, Outlaw said he wanted to wait for more information and to get the view of the three new aldermen who will take their seats in December before deciding. He said some of them had more knowledge about fire departments.
Outlaw said he agreed there was a need for the fire truck, but he was a little concerned about the timing of it and there were a lot of changes going on in fire departments.
