The Merrill Fire Department was able to secure additional equipment thanks to a recent grant from the Department of Natural Resources.
The grant, announced earlier this year was part of the Forest Fire Protection program, which provides funding for local department wildland firefighting activities. The Merrill Department received just over $7,000 this year, and has now been awarded more than $16,000 the past three years.
Fire Chief Dave Savone said, “We are extremely grateful that the DNR has awarded the Merrill Fire Department this grant funding. With these funds we will be able to continue our commitment to the protection of the citizens we serve in the rural areas.”
The grant award is specifically for wildland firefighting tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment. New equipment include brush jackets and pants, class a firefighting foam and sheaths to protect the departments tools.
