The Leoni Township Board of Trustees approved the purchase of a new fire apparatus with Marijuana Excise Tax Funds, the township reported in its spring newsletter (PDF).

The 2,000-gallon tanker is being built from scratch by Rosenbauer after the Leoni Township Board of Trustees approved using funds collected from the Marijuana Excise Tax to pay for the new $842,000 rig, township officials said Wednesday, April 24, according to mlive.com.

According to the township, Leoni purchased its last fire apparatus in 2017, after going 30 years without purchasing an apparatus prior to that.

The new tanker is expected to be completed and delivered to the township in May 2025.

The Township Board of Trustees feels that Marijuana Excise Tax Funds should benefit all residents of Leoni Township and not just one group, such as paving a specific road or supplementing just those residents that have sewer service.

With 10 marijuana dispensaries permitted, Leoni Township has the most in Jackson County, collecting more than $590,000 in marijuana tax revenue from the businesses through the state treasury in 2023 alone, according to state tax data, mlive.com reported.
