The Lily Fire and Rescue crew held their annual Hog Roast Fundraiser last Saturday. The majority of the funds raised at the hog roast goes toward purchasing new firefighting equipment and safety equipment for firefighters, while some of it is used toward Shop with a Firefighter.
At Saturday’s event, the crew unveiled their brand new fire truck at the front of their building. Lieutenant Greg Penning shared that the purchase would not have been possible without the generous donation of $300,000 made by the Laurel Fiscal Court.
“Each of the fire departments in the county were allotted $300,000 to purchase a new fire truck, and so we purchased a new pumper tanker,” Lt. Penning stated. “We just actually put it in service officially here within the last couple weeks.
“We’re very thankful for the funds that the fiscal court was able to allot to the fire department to purchase this new truck. That truck actually doubles our capacity of the water that we can bring to a fire, so that will put the fire out quicker,” Penning added.
Lt. Penning went on to express his gratitude toward Judge Executive David Westerfield and the magistrates for all the other ways in which they help the department as well.
As the time for the department’s aforementioned Shop with a Firefighter event — typically held around mid-December — approaches, the team is also accepting donations. Lily Fire and Rescue has been hosting the event for four years now. They encourage anyone interested in donating in support to contact Assistant Chief William Jones at (606) 351-8918.
At this time, Lily Fire and Rescue could also use additional volunteers. Those interested in volunteering may simply come to the department on any Thursday at 6:30 p.m. to attend training. It is also the day in which they perform maintenance on their trucks. Lily Fire and Rescue is located at 4034 East Highway 552 in Lily.
