Lee County (KY) Firefighter Injured in Fire Apparatus Accident

A Lee County (KY) firefighter was airlifted to UK Hospital Monday after an accident while on his way to a call.

The crash which happened around 12:30 p.m. on Highway 2017 near Highway 52 injured 22-year-old Kyle Cook.

“It was just so loud that you probably could’ve heard it for half a mile,” described Ruby McIntosh, who lives right beside the scene. “I knew, when I heard the racket, that he’d wrecked.”

Pieces and parts of the fire truck were scattered all over the road. The roof of the cab was torn off, where Cook, the driver and only person inside was removed.

“He wasn’t worried about himself. He was worried more about the truck,” McIntosh said.

Crews described Cook’s injuries as non-life threatening, but said he was flown to UK Hospital just to be on the safe side.

Cook was listed in “fair” condition at UK Hospital on Monday evening.

State Police are working to determine what caused the crash.
