Sanford (NC) Ladder Truck Damaged in Accident

Dec. 21—A Sanford fire truck was damaged in an accident in the city Thursday morning.

At around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Carthage and Wicker streets, an SUV struck the front of Sanford’s Ladder 1, totaling the SUV and damaging the front end of the 75-foot rear-mount ladder truck. A pickup truck was also involved in the accident, although a police report of the incident was not available as of Friday afternoon.

The driver of the SUV was treated at the scene by a crew from FirstHealth Ambulance. There were no other injuries reported. The Sanford Police Department diverted traffic around the scene for about an hour as crews cleaned up the accident.

Fire Chief Matt Arnold and other officials were assessing the damage to the truck. However, even if the truck has to go out of service for repairs, the city will still have a ladder truck available for major fires.

In late November, the Sanford Fire Department took delivery of a used 110-foot mid-mount aerial truck. A few months ago, the Sanford City Council approved the purchase of the refurbished truck while the city waits on its new 110-foot truck, slated for delivery in 2026.

According to a SFD Facebook post, the refurbished truck has a nearly identical setup to the new vehicle the city ordered. The 110-foot truck is slated to become the city’s primary ladder truck, with Ladder 1 as a backup.

Firefighters have been busy training on the refurbished truck, which has a bucket on the end and allows firefighters to travel vertically without climbing a ladder.

In addition to the accident, it was an extremely busy day for the Sanford Fire Department, which responded to numerous accidents, alarms and medical calls.
