Durham (NC) FD Performs High-Angle Rescue

The Durham (NC) Fire Department posted the following on its Facebook page Monday, Jan. 8:

At 9 a.m. Monday, Jan. 8, 2024, the Durham Fire Department was dispatched and responded with 23 personnel to a report of a high-angle rescue in the 300 block of Liberty Street.

On arrival, workers stated there was a person not affiliated with them lying on a platform and not responding. The subject was estimated to be 80 feet up. Firefighters made access to the injured subject using a ladder truck, while other firefighters accessed the subject by climbing the crane.

The subject was an injured male and not responsive but breathing. It is unknown how the injuries occurred but appeared to be related to a fall. Firefighters were able to move the subject to a basket on the outside of the crane structure and then lowered him to the ground where Durham County EMS began care and transport. The fire department was also assisted by Durham Police.

The crash happened the night of Jan. 2 when a firefighter was backing the apparatus into a Main Street firehouse.
