Whitesburg (KY) Firefighter Has Heart Attack on EMS Call, Dies in the Hospital

The Whitesburg (KY) Fire Department is mourning the loss of a longtime assistant chief who collapsed during an EMS call.

Assistant Fire Chief Joe Back suffered a massive heart attack Friday and transported to Pikeville Medical Center. He was eventually taken off life support, according to WYMT.

“He faithfully served the City of Whitesburg and Letcher County,” the fire department wrote on Facebook. “We ask that you continue prayers for his family.”

Back had served as a paid member since the 1980s.
