KY Fire Apparatus Driver Indicted in Connection with 2023 Firefighter Fatality

The video report of the fire apparatus fatality indictments begins at the 2:33 mark.

Two arrests have been made in connection to a Kentucky fire apparatus fatality that happened in October 2023, wymt.com reported.

Austin Turner, the driver of the fire apparatus for Coon Creek Volunteer Fire & Rescue, was indicted by a Leslie County grand jury Monday for murder and wanton endangerment, the report said.

Austin’s mother, Ethel Turner, who is also involved with the fire department, was indicted for tampering with physical evidence, according to the report.

Officials with the Leslie County Sheriff’s Department said when they arrived on the scene of the wreck in October 2023, Austin Turner had left the scene and another firefighter, Regina Huffman, was still trapped in the apparatus, the report said. First responders were able to remove Huffman from the truck and transport her to Mary Breckinridge ARH where she later died.

The Kentucky Firefighters Associated made the following Facebook post Oct. 29, 2023:

Firefighter Line of Duty Death

With regret, we announce the line-of-duty death of firefighter Regina Huffman of Coon Creek Fire & Rescue in Wooten, Kentucky. (Wooten is in Leslie County, approximately 10 miles southwest of Hazard.)

At approximately 10 p.m. Saturday, firefighters responded to an ATV accident with two people seriously injured. Helicopters were summoned for transport.

As the apparatus Huffman was riding in left the scene to go to the landing zone, it slipped off the roadway, went down an embankment, and struck a house. Huffman and another firefighter (her oldest son) were injured.

Huffman died from her injuries a few hours later at a local hospital. Her son’s injuries were minor. No other firefighters were injured.

Huffman was 39-years-old and is survived by her fiancé and six children.
