The Laurel County Fiscal Court recently contributed $300,000 to replace a nearly 30-year-old pumper truck.
During the fiscal court’s meeting last Thursday, Stephen Bales and Letch Day of the Keavy Volunteer Fire Department thanked the judge-executive and magistrates for their large donation.
“The Keavy Volunteer Fire Department would like to take this moment to formally thank the fiscal court for supporting the purchase of a new apparatus for the fire department to replace an aged pumper and thus maintain and improve our ability to respond to emergencies within Laurel County,” said Bales.
Bales went on to share that the fire department would not have been able to otherwise purchase the pumper truck due to insufficient funds. Members of the fire department displayed the new truck at the Laurel County Courthouse that day.
“”It has a larger pump, increased water capacity, in-line home induction, and better storage and access for the equipment used by the department,” Bales said of the truck.

The fiscal court’s contribution comes after an August 2021 commitment by the court to provide $3.3 million to purchase 11 Class-A pumper trucks for all departments which serve Laurel County.
“We were very fortunate to be able to help every fire department throughout the county,” Judge-Executive David Westerfield stated. “That touches every person in this county, you know, it ups the protection for our constituents. So we hope, in the future, that we can continue to help you volunteer fire departments do your job and do your job better.”
