Hummer, a division of General Motors, introduced at Fire Rescue International exhibition in Dallas, a specially-equipped H3 model for first responders and command vehicles.
The midsize H3 Hummer is about the same length as a midsize family sedan, but has all-terrain capabilities, including the ability to ford 2 feet of water and climb 16-inch obstacles, according to the maker.
According to Hummer, first responders can use its H3 as a personal vehicle as well, getting them to the emergency scene quickly and safely, regardless of the terrain or weather.
It’s equipped with a 242 hp Vortec in-line five-cylinder engine and has a 20 miles per gallon fuel economy rating, making it suitable for on-road driving as well as off-road, according to Hummer. It also has a turning radius comparable to a compact sedan.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, 95 percent of the nation’s volunteer firefighters are in rural departments where the go-anywhere capability of the H3, combined with its size and efficiency, makes it the ideal emergency response vehicle, according to Hummer.
Until Dec. 31, Hummer is offering a first responder package, at no charge, to any active member of the fire and rescue community, volunteer or career.
The package includes the purchaser’s choice of either an emergency signal package from Whelen Engineering or Federal Signal, valued at up to $2,500, or a black wraparound brush guard and lower grille-mounted off-road lights.
