GASTON COUNTY, N.C. — According to Gaston County officials, a man was struck and killed by a fire truck Thursday evening. The accident happened in Ranlo at Lowell Road and East Street.
Highway Patrol officials said a man, stepped out in the middle of the four-lane road into the path of the truck. It is believed the victim was returning from a bar, and alcohol may have been a factor in the accident. The name of the victim has not been released pending notification of the family.
A neighbor, Bradley Hyman, ran out of his home when he heard a loud noise. “I run up here and they were doing chest compressions and CPR,” he said. “It happened right here but the truck took him about 50 yards.”
The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk and the fire truck was driving slower than the speed limit, Highway Patrol said.
There are no charges pending, authorities said.
