Five Injured in Michigan Fire Apparatus Accident

Two adults and three children were injured after a car slammed into the back of a Grand Rapids fire truck that was parked along I-196 because of an earlier crash.

Westbound I-196 after Lake Michigan Drive is closed.

The crash happened at 10:12 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-196 at the Butterworth Street overpass. Snowy and slippery conditions, particularly at the overpass, likely contributed to the crash, fire officials said.

Police said the adult female passenger was unconscious and taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital. Three children in the back seat were taken to DeVos Children’s Hospital.

The adult male, the driver of the Ford Focus, needed to be extricated and also was taken to Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital.

Police later said they did not believe any of the injuries were life-threatening. The driver was identified as a 31-year-old man with a leg injury. His sister, 26, was the front seat passenger and her injuries were not specified.

The children, ages 5,6, and 8, had little or no injuries but were taken to DeVos Children’s Hospital for observation.
