Firefighter Killed in Fire Apparatus Rollover

BIENVILLE PARISH, LA—On Monday June 30, a Bienville Parish firefighter was killed after the fire apparatus he was operating rolled over. The firefighter, 52-year-old Robert B. Thomas, a captain with Bienville Parish Fire Protection District 7, was unrestrained at the time of the crash.

According to preliminary police reports, Thomas was operating the apparatus, built on a commercial chassis, when he entered a curve at approximately 10:30 PM. Thomas was returning from a structure fire. As he entered the curve, the vehicle drifted off the roadway. In an attempt to regain control, Thomas reportedly overcorrected, causing the truck to cross the center lines, ultimately crashing into a ditch. The apparatus rolled over, ejected Thomas, and he was pinned underneath when it came to rest.

Thomas was pronounced dead at the scene.
