A Palos Fire Protection District aerial ladder truck was severely damaged Wednesday morning as a result of an apparent electrical fire, Chief Patrick Gericke said.
The fire broke out in the truck’s cab after 8:30 a.m., and the one firefighter on the vehicle pulled it into the parking lot of a supermarket.
An engine and two ambulances responded, and the firefighter was not injured, Gericke said. He said he believed the truck was returning from a call when the fire occurred.
The chief said damage to the truck was extensive and it cannot be deployed on calls.
Gericke said the district was in the process of replacing the 1989 ladder truck, with delivery of a new vehicle expected in January. In the interim, the district would have access to an aerial ladder truck through mutual aid agreements with nearby fire districts, he said.
