Fire Apparatus in Ditch Closes Merrillville (IN) Street

Mississippi Street was closed in both directions Tuesday afternoon as crews worked to remove a BP fire truck from a ditch.

The fire truck went into the ditch on the south side of the street around noon.

Merrillville police reported that the driver of the fire truck, owned by the BP Whiting refinery, swerved it into the ditch to avoid colliding with a northbound vehicle that had crossed the center line.

The fire truck had been undergoing maintenance at a Merrillville shop and was being test driven when the incident occurred, police said. No injuries were reported.
