Fire Apparatus Crashes into South Berwick ME Woods

A South Berwick (ME) firefighter was injured when the tanker truck he was driving veered off the road and crashed into a wooded area.

Fire Chief George Gorman said firefighter Adam Leach, 31, drove the vehicle to the scene of a chimney fire in Eliot. He said the 3,000-gallon tanker truck was called off en route, and Leach turned onto Fife’s Lane to take back roads on his return to the fire station.

“This was not an emergency run. He was just driving back to the station,” Assistant Fire Chief Norm Chouinard said.

A South Berwick ambulance transported the firefighter to medical treatment. Gorman said hat Leach was still being evaluated and that officials were “looking into” whether a medical condition caused the crash.

The truck crashed into large pine and oak trees, destroying the truck, which the town purchased new for $150,000 around 12 years ago. Insurance is expected to help mitigate the cost of replacing the truck.
